Capability 03 / 06 / First trade on site

Fire mains, hydrants and suppression pipework for power stations.

External fire mains, hydrants, internal hose points and suppressant systems installed to code on live power station sites, often as the first trade on the job.

Fire mains and suppression systems

On a new build power station the fire mains go in first. Nothing else on the plant can be commissioned until the fire protection is in and proven, which is why KBVI has so often been the first trade on site and one of the last off it.

KBVI installed the fire mains on the BELCO power station in Hamilton, Bermuda, a new build 60MW heavy oil plant, for BWSC in 2019. At Discovery Park in Kent the job opened with fire mains and fire suppressant systems and went on to the argon fire suppressant lines through the whole plant. External mains, hydrants, internal hose points and suppressant lines, on live sites for main contractors who cannot afford a failure.

How the job runs.

  1. Survey and set out

Read the drawings, walk the site while it is still open ground, and set out the mains before the other trades arrive.

  2. Fabricate

Spools and hydrant assemblies fabricated to drawings.

  3. Install

External mains, hydrants and internal hose points installed to code, on the programme the main contractor is working to.

  4. Prove

Installed and proven so the rest of the plant can be commissioned.

  5. Handover

Marked up and handed over, with KBVI usually still on site for the process pipework that follows.

Straight answers.

What buyers ask about fire mains and suppression systems.

Why are fire mains the first pipework on a new build?

Because nothing else can be commissioned until the fire protection is in place. On both power station builds on KBVI's record the job opened with the fire mains and suppressant systems.

Do you install fire mains on live sites?

Yes. Fire mains and suppression are installed to code on live power station sites, working around the other trades and the operator.

Do you do the process pipework as well?

Usually. At Discovery Park the crew stayed two years after the fire mains and worked nearly every pipeline in the plant.

One email and the pipework starts moving. Your job gets priced by the crew that welds it and stands on the site from first spool to final test.
