The short answer
Clarifier pump pipework on a steelworks is replaced by surveying the existing runs, prefabricating the new spools, stripping out the old pipework and refitting the new inside the time the plant allows. KBVI did this on the BOS plant clarifier at British Steel, Scunthorpe, in 3 inch and 2.5 inch carbon steel schedule 40.

The job
The clarifier on the BOS plant at British Steel, Scunthorpe, needed its pump pipework removed and replaced. The plant around it was running. The new runs were 3 inch and 2.5 inch carbon steel schedule 40, and the case study on this site shows the frames from the job.
How it was done
Survey the existing runs against the drawings, prefabricate the replacement spools, then strip out and refit within the time the plant allowed. The same sequence runs on any plant refit: everything that can be made before the plant is touched is made before the plant is touched.
- 01Survey the existing pipework and the drawings
- 02Prefabricate the replacement spools
- 03Strip out the old runs
- 04Refit, weld and prove the new
- 05Hand back on the programme
Why it matters for the next one
A steelworks has hundreds of runs like this. The contractor that did the last one already knows the plant, the access and the people. KBVI is based in Scunthorpe with the steelworks on the doorstep.
Can you see the photographs?
Yes. The BOS Plant Clarifier case study on this site has the frames from the job, taken by the crew that did the work.
Do you do the same on other plant?
Yes. Stripping out and refitting existing plant on running sites is one of the six things KBVI does, from clarifier pipework to complete process lines.
